چکیده
A new record has been set for the acceleration of particles in a plasma wakefield — an energy gain of more than 2.7 GeV in a 10-cm-long device. Pushing the energy frontier is not easy. But plasmas, which are capable of generating large focusing and accelerating fields, might offer a solution. Beam−plasma and laser−plasma tests have shown promising results, and more recently beam-driven wakefield accelerators have been used to demonstrate acceleration and focusing of both electrons and positrons in metre-length plasma modules. The latest research, carried out by Mark Hogan and colleagues1 (#B1) at the Stanford Linear Accelerator (SLAC) and reported in Physical Review Letters, goes even further and marks a crucial step along the path towards future high-energy machines. The team have developed a plasma-wakefield accelerator based on a highly focused, ultrarelativistic electron beam from the SLAC linac. The beam, in bunches of more than 1010 electrons of energy 28.5 GeV, is used to generate a plasma inside a lithium vapour, and then to drive a large wave within that plasma. If the resulting plasma is sufficiently dense, a critical 'blowout' regime is reached in which the plasma electrons are expelled from the beam volume, leaving behind a pure ion column. These electrons return one-half plasma period later and congregate behind the main body of the driving electron bunch, creating a large-amplitude plasma wakefield that accelerates particles at the rear of the pack. The transverse profile and the energy spread of the beam before and after the plasma are monitored, and the acceleration and focusing achieved is impressive. Particles at the rear of the bunch are accelerated to an energy about 2.7 GeV larger than their incoming energy (Fig. 1). This corresponds to an accelerating gradient of 37 GeV m-1 — more than a thousand times that in conventional linacs. (#f1) Figure 1: Electron acceleration in a plasma wakefield. Such field-ionized plasma production does not suffer fromthe timing, lifetime or alignment issues that plague other plasma techniques.ReferencesHogan, M. J. et al. In this work, applicability of Particle in Cell-Monte Carlo Collisions (PIC-MCC) simulation method for better understanding of the plasma physical mechanisms and real important aspects of a plasma column driven by surface wave plasma discharges that is used in plasma antennas is examined. Via the implementation of geometry and physical parameters of the plasma column to an Object Oriented PIC-M...
متن کاملTransparency of overdense plasma with V shape density profile
In this study, we investigate the transparency of an overdense inhomogeneous plasma slab. This anomalous transmission is achieved when the conditions provided for the incident electromagnetic wave to excite coupled surface waves on the both sides of the slab. These conditions require that the homogeneous overdense plasma, or the metallic film, is placed between two dielectric layers. Here, the ...

In this paper, the collisional filamentation instability of an electron beam-weakly magnetized and ionized plasma has been investigated in the presence of background plasma, using the fluid description. By describing the equilibrium configuration in the presence of binary collision terms between charged and neutral particles and using the local approximation method, the dispersion relation (DR)...

Low temperature plasma assisted nit riding treatments of 316 stainless steel produce a complex layer constituted by tow different metastable f.c.c. solid solution denoted ( γ N1 and γ N2 ). About the formation of these double layers, different hypothesis was proposed in the literature. For verifying these hypotheses, the effects of differentes conditions such as nit riding temperature, cleaning...

The propagation of arbitrary amplitude dust ion acoustic waves (DIAWs) in a magnetized collisional dusty plasma including hot electrons, with kappa velocity distribution for electrons, warm ions and dust particles has been studied. In the presence of immobile massive dust particulates, DIAWs have been investigated through the Sagdeev pseudo-potential method. It is demonstrated that the amplitud...
